About Us

American Hardwoods is Australia’s Premiere Wholesaler of exotic hardwoods.

For almost a decade, American Hardwoods has been committed to sourcing the finest timbers for supply to the Australian market. From our facility in Dandenong South, Melbourne, Victoria, we supply American and Australian Hardwoods to timber merchants, manufacturers and professional timber artisans.

Established nearly 10 years ago, we regularly travel to the US for sourcing timber direct from the best sawmills, quality assurance and searching out new and exciting species and products.

Our timbers are used all over Australia in fine furniture, joinery and flooring – by some of Australia’s premium cabinet makers and joiners in luxury building fit outs.

With over 50 years of industry experience across the American Hardwoods team, you can be assured we know our timber.

We’re proud to partner with the American Hardwood Export Council. The AHEC is the leading international trade association for the U.S. hardwood industry, representing the committed U.S. hardwood exporters and the major U.S. hardwood product trade associations. AHEC runs a worldwide programme to promote the full range of American hardwoods in over 50 export markets.

The Source

American Hardwoods

Our American hardwoods are sourced from the Appalachian region of the US East coast, largely from Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee

Our team regularly visits the States to source new suppliers and species to meet the sophisticated demands of the Australian market.

The Appalachian region - in yellow above - shows where American Hardwoods sources its timbers.

We’re committed to upholding best practice when it comes to maintaining the future of the timbers we sell.

The United States has excelled in the sustainability of its hardwood forests. Due to the intensive application of Best Management Practices (BMP), the hardwood forests of America support a vibrant healthy stand of timber, as well as a large and diverse wildlife population, clean rivers and streams, and a host of recreational activities. The last 80 years of improved forest management and state and federal regulations, together with greater silvicultural understanding and public desire to conserve forests, have resulted in a dramatic recovery and renewal of the American hardwood resource.

The hardwood sawmilling and processing industry, which depends upon this resource, is the largest producer of sawn hardwood in the world. In recent years, the U.S. has substantially increased exports and through careful management of its forests, the United States is growing more hardwood each year than it harvests, ensuring reliable and long term supplies. As the world faces up to environmental change, with sustainability the watchword for natural materials, the good news is that the net volume of hardwood growing stock in the USA has increased from 184,090 million cubic feet in 1953 to just under 400,000 million cubic feet in 2007 (Resource Planning Act Assessment 2007).

Responding to increasing demands for independent assurances that U.S. hardwoods derive from legal and sustainable sources, the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) has published an Assessment of Lawful Harvesting and Sustainability of U.S. Hardwood Exports. This report was prepared by independent consultants and peer reviewed. The research provides confirmation of the legal and sustainable status of U.S. hardwood forest management.
